The Canvas item is used to generate Maparts from images.

Crafting

To craft a canvas, combine an empty map, red dye, blue dye and green dye in a crafting grid.

Canvases can be used to display custom images in game. To use them you must head to our Map Art creation tool, select your image and then craft as many canvases as the image requires. All you need to do then is have the blank canvases in your inventory, click Create Mapart on the web page, and you'll have the image in-game!
